West Valley of the Kings - WV23
tomb of Ai II - XVIIIth Dynasty
The
tomb was discovered in the winter of 1816
by
Giovanni Battista Belzoni and
fully cleared by Otto Schaden in the summer of 1972. Belzoni's work
appears to have brought to light little more than the broken
sarcophagus. This was removed from the tomb at the end of the XIXth
century for restoration and exhibition, and has recently been
reinstalled and surmounted by the lid discovered in 1972 during
Schaden's clearance. Other items brought to light by Schaden include
fragments of wooden deity-figures, several gilded copper pall rosettes
and fragmentary human remains of uncertain origin, as well as intrusive
pottery of New Kingdom and Roman date. The mummy of Ai II was not yet
identified. |
