Iorwerth Eiddon Stephen Edwards
(1909-1996)
In 1934 he was appointed to the British Museum; he became Keeper of Egyptian Antiquities in 1955 and retired in 1974. He has excavated with the Egypt Exploration Society in Egypt and the Sudan. From 1973 to 1980 he was a member of the Committee of Archeologists appointed by UNESCO to supervise the removal of the temples of Philae. His publications deal chiefly with the Egyptian language and he is joint editor of the Cambridge Ancient History. Dr Edwards, is a Fellow of the British Academy.
